In the case of Pineda v. Williams Sonoma Stores, Inc., the California Supreme Court generally ruled that retailers may not ask customers for their zip codes when conducting a credit card transaction because a zip code is considered personal identifiable information under the Song Beverly Credit Card Act of 1971.
